Offbeat_Client_2004

aquí esta la info que aparece en la pag:

Offbeat is a Java and XML based application and communication server that can be used with Macromedia Flash. The Offbeat server gives your application the boost you have always dreamed of!

The first beta version of the server is now available for free. Download a copy, give it a try and send us feedback!

What can I do with it?
The Offbeat server is a multi purpose real-time server. The server applications are programmed in Java, so it is possible to write any kind of applications. During the tests, we have used Offbeat to control an embedded device, we have created chats, news readers and other databse applications. The applications are easy to install; just copy the application to the apps directory and start the server!

The Offbeat server can be used for example to create:

- Data driven applications (ie. intranets)
- Communication applications (chats, real-time data sharing...)
- Games
- Monitoring applications
- Controlling applications

Technical features
The main technical features of the Offbeat server are:

- Easy application development and deployment
- Clear and easy Java programming API
- Client messaging
- Groups (pre-defined and dynamic)
- Application variables
- Database connection pooling
- Object pooling
- XML based communication protocol
- Internal logging
- XML configuration
- Fast response times!

Getting started
There are a few things that are needed to start the server. The 6 phase list below can be used as the basic guide to get started with the server:

1. Make sure you have J2SDK 1.4.X
2. Unzip the Offbeat package (creates directory Offbeat)
3. Add the bin directory to the CLASSPATH environent variable
4. Open shell or a DOS command prompt
5. Append to the bin directory
6. Start server by typing: java Offbeat

The demo apps are in the apps directory. The Windows executables are in the /apps/files directory. Just start the server and the executables and play around. Please note that the executables have been configured to connect to the localhost (IP 127.0.0.1) and they use the default Offbeat port 8384. This means that you need to start the demos from the same PC where the Offbeat server is running.

Additional information
The current version has client library only for the Macromedia Flash MX 2004. Flash MX client and a Java client will be available later. The free beta version accepts ten concurrent client connections.

Please contact us directly via e-mail if you have some feedback (bugs, suggestions etc). The feedback can be sent to: Kai Hannonen ([email protected]) or Ofri Porat ([email protected]). We hope to hear from you!
